Paris-and-madrid-based firm independent architectural diplomacy has unveiled their masterplan proposal for the 2015 pan african games, a multi-sport event held every four years that electrifies the continent and focusses on exemplary african and international sportsmanship. while this year's event will be held in the original host city of brazzaville, capital of the republic of congo, first the first time in 50 years, IAD's plan uses the meandering lines of the congo river to inform the complex's layout and express the cartographic connection of the city to other african capitals.
Aside from channeling the vitality of the river, the sinuous paths also delineate 3 programmatic areas and organize public spaces. the built spaces evoke the oblong shapes prevalent in traditional african crafts, textiles and fabrics; in particular tribal shields served as volumetric references for the intersecting concrete shells of the main stadium.
