Manifesto Exhibition


In the kingdom of architecture the shape reigns supreme. Ever since the beginning of history, pure geometric form has been one of architecture’s recurrent obsessions. A genealogy of buildings shaped as pyramids, spheres, and cubes can be traced back to ancient times, while contemporary projects, either as poured concrete or virtual bytes, often resemble stacked boxes and looping skyscrapers. Despite torrents of pure shapes flooding with evidence magazine pages and computer screens around the world, architecture lacks a written work to declare its intentions. Pure Hardcore Icons is the first manifesto on pure form in architecture. In order to commemorate the international publication of the book Pure Hardcore Icons (published by Artifice Books on Architecture) WAI Architecture Think Tank, directed by artists, architects, and writers Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia will be presenting the exhibition Pure Hardcore Icons during the 2013 edition of the Beijing Design Week. The show will display a selection of the original collages, photomontages, paintings and artifacts featured in a book that promises to bring form—a persistent taboo in the theoretical discourse—to the forefront of the architectural discussion. Through a mixture of perspicacity, conviction and humour, Pure Hardcore Icons aims to raise awareness about the dialectic of pure form in architecture, hoping that its potential and limitations can be fully grasped either in practice, in the academia, or as a cultural and intellectual exercise.


WAI Think Tank is a Workshop for Architectural Intelligentsia founded in Brussels in 2008 by Puerto Rican artist, author and architect Cruz Garcia (San Juan, 1983) and French artist, poet and architect Nathalie Frankowski (Dundee, 1985) who are also founders of the art collective Garcia Frankowski. Based in Beijing since 2009, WAI publishes in culture, art and architecture magazines around the world while it designs and edits the self published What About It? (part of the Archizines world travelling exhibition for independent architectural publications). Recent WAI publications include Pure Hardcore Icons: A Manifesto on Pure Form in Architecture (Artifice Books, 2013), and the upcoming Shapes, Islands and Text: A Garcia Frankowski Manifesto (Vibok Works, 2013). The work of WAI and Garcia Frankowski has been featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, as well solo and group shows in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Osaka, Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, Columbus, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago de Chile, San Juan, London, Dublin, Porto, Lisbon, Barcelona, Brussels, Paris, Milan, Venice, Berlin, Helsinki, and Bratislava.

      在建筑的王国中，形状至高无上。从历史起始，纯粹的几何形式就是建筑中循环往复让人着迷的主题。以金字塔、球体、立方体为原型的建筑谱系，可以追溯至古代；而在当代建筑中，无论是浇筑的混凝土或是虚拟的数字图形，都重复着相似的形式，例如堆积的盒子和连贯一体的摩天楼。当今，全球建筑界从杂志到电子媒体都已被纯粹形式的洪流所覆盖，而文字作为声明这一主张的必要形式，却是缺失的。纯粹极致标志，成为了第一部关于建筑纯粹形式的宣言。为了纪念“纯粹极致标志”的全球发行（由Artifice Books on Architecture出版），WAI Architecture Think Tank (由身兼艺术家、建筑师、作家的Nathalie Frankowski与Cruz Garcia总监领衔)将在2013年北京设计周呈现这一作品。

        展览将精选展示取自书中的拼贴原稿、合成影响、绘画以及人工制品；试图将纯粹形式这一长久以来理论争论中的禁忌话题放置到建筑讨论的前沿。结合了洞察力、信服力与幽默感，纯粹极致标志旨在唤起对纯粹形式与建筑之间辩证关系的认识；希望纯粹形式的潜力与局限性，能在将来的建筑实践与学术领域，或是文化或知识界的运用中，被更完整地理解与掌握。

        展览期间特别于10月3日18:00举办“纯粹极致标志”讲座，WAI Think Tank主办人Nathalie Frankowski与Cruz Garcia将现场与大家分享“纯粹极致标志”,并与大家展开讨论。

       WAI Think Tank 是一个定位于建筑知识界的工作室，于2008年成立于布鲁塞尔；由波多黎各艺术家、作家、建筑师Cruz Garcia (圣胡安, 1983)，与法国艺术家、诗人、建筑师Nathalie Frankowski (邓迪, 1985)共同创立；同时，他们也是Garcia Frankowski艺术收藏的创始人。WAI自2009年起创立于北京，其作品在世界范围内被刊登于文化、艺术、建筑等各类杂志，同时WAI设计、编辑并独立出版了杂志What About It? (入选Archizine独立建筑出版物世界巡回展)。近期WAI的出版物包括纯粹极致标志：一部关于建筑纯粹形式的宣言(Artifice Books, 2013)，以及即将问世的形状，岛屿，文本：一部Garcia Frankowski的宣言(Vibok Works, 2013)。WAI与Garcia Frankowski的作品被收录于美国纽约当代艺术博物馆，纽约Storefront艺术与建筑博物馆，德国维特拉设计博物馆。WAI的个展与群展遍布北京、上海、东京、大阪、悉尼、墨尔本、洛杉矶、哥伦布思，布宜诺斯艾利斯、蒙得维的亚、智利圣地亚哥、圣胡安、伦敦、都柏林、波尔图、里斯本、巴塞罗那、布鲁塞尔、巴黎、米兰、威尼斯、柏林、赫尔辛基、布拉迪斯拉发。WAI提问，What About It?
