The Umbrella is located on the same mega-site of approximately 37,200 square metres (400,000 square feet) as another of Eric Owen Moss‘s projects, ‘Stealth‘. The area was formerly an industrial site in Culver City, and now provides office space and business facilities for many of the creative industries based in California. The Umbrella is a cascading series of laminated glass panels mounted over an open-air platform and stairway and is the first building visible directly ahead after passing through the Stealth development. The Umbrella functions as a bandstand for musicians and speechmakers, and as a lunchtime seating area and deck from which to view the entire site. It is a careful amalgamation of two existing roof trusses, two recycled trusses from a demolished building on the site, and a new steel truss-like beam. A steel pipe structure attached to the trusses, which covers the stairs, supports the rippled glass canopy. Directly below the Umbrella is a video and conference centre, and beyond it, open production areas, conference spaces, and private offices for the tenant, an advertising and film production company.
