The Kwangju Bank Headquarters building-creates a new symbol of prosperity, and reflects South Korea‘s burgeoning economy. It will help (ransform Kwangju, the historical agricultural center of southeast Korea, into a major center of trade and business.
Fentress Bradburn‘s design is inspired by its Korean cultural context both in its coloration and patterning. The facade is detailed at its multiple cornice lines to suggest bowed Asian beams. The rhythm of the glass and natural stone course mimics the patterns used in traditional Korean fabric. The mass of the building responds in typically Korean cultural fashion to the dichotomy between the past and the future.
The 35-stoiT Kwangju Bank Headquarters is the first high-rise building in which Fentress Bradburn‘s contextual regionalism has been fully applied. The resulting design lias an indefinable quality that affords viewers the pleasure of an image that is at once strangelv familiar and entirely new.
