The creation of a new museum image, a functional, practical building plan and an ideal environment for the display of art, are key to the design of Fentress Brariburn‘s National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The design concept is a contextual interpretadon of the architectural symbols in the original building‘s design, fhus enhancing the profile of the existing museum, while creating a harmoniously sited facility with greater functionality and flexibility.
The comprehensive architectural design draws context and cultural inspiration from Oklahoma City itself, capturing the spirit of the American West. The firm reinterpreted Western images, such as covered wagons and camp tents, in the outstretched canopy that draws visitors to the entrance of the Hall of Fame. The interiors then open into large and brightly lit exhibition spaces that guide visitors through the displays.
Italian architectural critic Maurizio Vitta wrote that, "the architects have succeeded in creating an ‘international‘ icon of the American frontier and, by extrapolation, of America herself."
