L’ECRIN is a boutique in Tokyo’s Nishi-Azabu district handling high quality French bags. Its name L’ECRIN means “Jewel Box” in French. We undertook the store’s renovation.
The client desired good interior visibility enticing to passers-by, yet maintaining a moderate degree of privacy for customers. In response, we proposed a complexly patterned glass façade, bright and glittering in effect like a glass jewel box, through which the interior would be half-visible. Patterned glass, however, would lack transparency, and cut glass would cost too much. Hence, we developed a special glass featuring the herring bone motif, “Le Chevron,” which is also displayed on the lining of the store’s bags.
We began by creating a pattern, using a stainless steel frame with sharpened edges. Then, laying plate glass of 12mm thickness on the frame, we heated it in a kiln to around 675°C, the temperature at which glass softens. The glass, by its own weight, sagged 10 – 13mm into the frame’s open spaces to produce the individual chevrons. The result is a gently billowing glass that seems to fill the interior with a happy mood. Beyond, the beautiful bags glow like colorful jewels against a backdrop of custom-made furniture, silver leaf fittings, and limestone walls.
