In 1936, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill invented what was to become known as the corporate practice of architecture, a departure from the conventional firm models of its contemporaries and a first step in making it the defining practice of design worldwide.

What would be the outcome if SOM assembled the entirety of its current work in one place and invited some of the field’s foremost thinkers to evaluate it critically? In its first issue of the SOM Journal, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill both asks this question and answers it with an array of current projects and research being undertaken by the office.
