'Kiritoushi' is a single family residence located on the threshold between an older suburban development and rural fields. designed by japenese architect daisuke sugawara, the name is derived from the inversely sculpted forms from within a simple exterior shell -- an excavation ('kiritoushi') that reveals the sequence of space on a range of scales.
The outer form helps the timber structure to fit within its suburban context, a concept that is broken immediately upon entering the home. angular cuts carve a large central social space surrounded by more private program. openings of varying dimensions connect the interior spaces to the green fields outside, setting up crossing datums of circulation and light-tunnels ideal for effective ventilation and indirect temperature control.
