Snøhetta has continued its ongoing collaboration with Aesop with the opening of its second signature store in Oslo,Norway.Situated in the vibrant retail residential district of Majorstuen in the heart of the city, ‘Aesop Homansbyen’ was designed to complement the other branch conceived by the firm.
The Snøhetta-designed store occupies the ground floor of a functionalist 1940s apartment building; the compact 63-square meter interior reminiscent of original details and materiality.Timber is the primary material, with a geometric motif from the existing timber detailing starring as the starting point for the design direction. A traditional woodworking technique called ‘Intarsia’ was a source of influence with the pattern replicated meticulously on the series of three-dimensional oak panels. These bespoke panels – softly illuminated by wall lighting fixtures- clad the wall and counter giving volume and a sense of authenticity and calm.

The same oak used furnishes the ceiling plane, built-in shelving and a perforated dividing wall that reveals glimpses of light from a restored and concealed stairway which leads to the basement level staff and storage area. The use of oak and brass details on the sink creates a warm and calm atmosphere in the store. This branch is the sixth Snøhetta-designed Aesop store to open with locations ranging from Singapore to Berlin.
