Return to Dust
This is the renovation of an old factory located in Lane 1293, Yuyuan Road, Shanghai. Yuyuan Road was first built in the third year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1911). The Ministry of Works crossed the border and built a road, named after the famous garden "Yuyuan" at that time. Every alley here may have a wonderful legendary story. The former Yuyuan Road may have been visited and even inhabited by a group of celebrities from Shanghai Beach at that time. Located in No. 2A, next to the south side of the project, a three storey western style small building with a walled yard, Jiande Square, was listed as the fifth batch of outstanding historical buildings in Shanghai in 2015. He Sui, the old man of the Alliance, and his son He Kang once lived here. Wu Shi, who Mao Zedong called the No.1 emissary, was the top intelligence officer of the CPC who had infiltrated the Kuomintang. He and his adjutant Nie Xi often came to Jiande Square to transmit important military information. The prototype of Yu Zecheng in the TV series "Lurk" was Wu Shi. Time has changed, and now Yuyuan Road is one of the most fashionable and bustling commercial streets in Shanghai, especially with a constant stream of young people coming to consume and check in. The information of peaceful life is still constantly exchanged through contemporary means, with nostalgia and novelty coexisting, and culture and commerce blending together.

A shabby house
The existing building is located on the north side of Jiande Fang in the alleyway. This single story old factory was built around the early 1950s using extremely simple and simple methods, especially in the western-style alleyway, which appears simple and inconspicuous. Brick walls and columns, with no concrete structure at all. The roof is made of simple herringbone wooden beams, wooden boards, and fiberboards covered with red tiles, without any other insulation measures. It is hot in summer and cold in winter. The indoor floor settlement is uneven, with low in the east and high in the west. The exterior of the building has only one door, which is very low-key and inconspicuous.

Urban wabi-sabi
The project plan is to transform a comprehensive space into a main exhibition hall for small-scale cultural and artistic exhibitions, a coffee shop for chatting and conference salons, and a landscape design studio. Both homeowners and designers hope to maintain this urban tranquility while incorporating current elements.
The exterior facade of the building facing Lane 1293 has not been treated except for the steel plate canopy and a small sign added at the back, trying to maintain the low-key and simple space. Entering this space from the alley, the first step is to reserve a 7-meter-long passage, which serves as a transition between the alley and the internal space, reducing mutual interference between the two. There is an L-shaped semi open corridor inside the building, which is an important transportation road connecting exhibition halls, design studios, cafes, storage, bathrooms, etc. It can also serve as an outdoor leisure and breathable inner courtyard. In the narrow courtyard with only a "line of sky", it is designed and planted with vibrant plants through landscape design. The biggest feature of the space is the dilapidated wooden watchboard roof and simple wooden beam frames. The roof tiles have been repaired and no longer leak rain, but many of the original tile boards have been damaged and decayed. Therefore, a layer of rock wool insulation was first added under this layer of wooden boards, followed by an old layer of wooden boards, continuing the quiet style of this wooden board roof and achieving better insulation effects. The original wooden frame was not decorated and was exposed to the maximum extent possible. Some load-bearing walls have also been reinforced. The ground is completely leveled with concrete. The main exhibition hall adopts a simple tone, with gypsum board sealing on the walls, which not only provides moisture resistance but also serves as a better background for the display. Part of the walls of the caf é have restored the old and mottled green brick walls, retaining a nostalgic atmosphere. A skylight has also been opened on the top for lighting, allowing you to feel the changes in natural light throughout the day and adding a touch of relaxed living atmosphere. The innermost space is the Shanghai Zhibi Landscape Design Studio, which features a glass "courtyard" embedded into the interior, becoming a major fun element in this area.
