“We are small but important!” This statement was our guiding principle in the conception of the Kinderhouse. The building is situated in an industrial zone between two roads (one with a high volume of traffic). Despite these initial difficulties, the house has become a secure and comfortable place completely oriented to a child’s point of view.
The scale is child-friendly, large and small alike, and respects the difference between kindergarten-age children and toddlers. The house allows children to engage all of their senses: the group-rooms get light from both the southeast and the southwest through the elevated room spaces, so that the progression of the day is visible. The building is flooded with light by floor-to-ceiling glazing, skylights, and the atrium.
Recesses in the building offer views into the garden from all points. A pointed colour scheme identifies the separate areas, serving to orient the children and emphasizing different lighting effects. There are separate room zones for diversified activities such as seat-hollow and a tree house gallery. Acoustic elements enhance the speech intelligibility and simplify language learning and listening.
