Public biodiversity is a project located in Milano, and aimed to reconvert two former exhibition pavilions in the area of Portello, into a botanic garden, capable to attract visitors from everywhere and open to the public thanks to the development of complementary activities, such as workshops and didactic events.
The starting point of the proposal is to include Portello into the new urban dynamics of the city and provide it with public and collective uses: the botanic garden is so designed to be a sort of didactic museum, that hosts more than 200 species and celebrates bio-diversity in all of its aspects.
An adaptive logic characterizes the project: rather than modifying the existing structure of the pavilions, the proposal is disconnected by its external contour. Old and new are clearly distinguishable: form doesn’t follow function in this case.
The new program is completely separated by its industrial involucre.
该植物园中植物物种的收集被分成热带植物和亚热带植物:不同的种类依照展览和观察目的放置。
The species’ collection is divided into tropical and sub-tropical plants: different species are hosted according to exhibitive and observation purposes.
Public bio-diversity is not only a planetary garden, to quote Gilles Clement: above all it’s a climatic dispositive. Thant to the use of specific botanic species, in fact, it will be possible to control some parameters, such as temperature (which will constantly be between 22 and 26 degrees), and humidity (around 60% during the whole year). All the technical systems previously installed (ac, heating) are not necessary anymore.
At the same time the botanic garden is a collective space, imagined as a sort of urban corridor connected with the external square (PiazzaGino Valle), and with the area of the Portello Park.
The project is based on a spatial, conceptual and environmental continuity with the context.
