New York based designer Alex Proba, known for her bold color palette and compositions, presents her latest series ‘Luster’ to debut in Soho, New York city. Studio Proba’s transdisciplinary oeuvre ranges from product, graphic, environmental, and furniture design and artwork. For her latest endeavor, Proba attempts the unexpected with a collection of rugs that vibrate not only in color but elegance. The interior imagery of the series is the result of a collaboration with designers Andrés Reisinger and Six n. Five. The seemingly photographed worlds in which these rugs are draped are the rendered creations of these two design studios.

A personal project and one of her best known works ‘A poster a day’ is a clear representation of studio Proba’s use of vivid coloring and compositions which range from geometric to abstract to surreal. The poster series served as a starting point for ‘Luster’ once Proba turned her attention to rugs. In the spirit of the challenge, the collection sees Proba’s break from her usual brights as it is made up of muted tones punctuated by metallics. Proba explains: “It’s rare to find metallic yarn in rugs meant for everyday use. It was interesting to introduce it into a medium where it doesn’t belong.”
These soft hues are echoed in the quiet monochromatism of the renderings of Barcelona-based studios of Andrés Reisinger and Six n. Five.
Each rug was hand tufted in northern India and made of hand dyed wool, hand dyed bamboo silk and gold yarn. The collection is a post-factum part of the annual sight unseen OFFSITE showcase which took place in Manhattan in May of 2018. Luster by studio Proba will be on view and sold at the Roll & Hill showroom at Soho’s 3 Mercer Street, beginning July 12th 2018 from 6-9PM.
