AG is one of the finalists for concept design of Art Pavilion in CUHK. The mission of the Art Pavilion is to integrate art into the intellectual life of CUHK. We design the Art Pavilion as an unfolding spatial journey of art encountered by the natural sceneries, exhibits, classrooms, communal encountering along.

Art Pavilion
The new Art Pavilion is part of the greater whole Art Museum Cluster. It is new place setting specifically designed for the pilot cross-disciplinary co-teaching program to align museum work with school curriculum, transform galleries into classroom and engage students with original artworks, promote art-making, curating, teaching and learning. The design seamlessly connected to the existing galleries to create an expanded and cohesive journey, yet set a potential link to the future extension of the Teaching Building to become an Art & Intellectual Hub along the University Mall.
Connectivity & Accessibility
The new Art Pavilion synergistically connects with Art Museum to create multiple access points on various levels at University Mall & University Avenue to enhance publicity. The new Art Pavilion also serves as part of the whole journey as well as a Campus Public Connector and Barrier Free Access (BFA) between University Mall & University Avenue for enhanced campus connectivity and accessibility. The design provides a landscape ramp along University Avenue to Cultural Plaza, directly lead public to the Art Museum or University Mall though the Art Pavilion.
Curated Space vs Free Space
We classified the Art Pavilion functions as two types of spaces, Curated Space & Free Space.Curated Space includes museum grade exhibition galleries cum teaching classrooms.Free Space includes cafe, artist studio, workshop, open terrace and public circulation. On the upper datum, Curated Space is expressed as a timeless and monolithic mass, echoing with the timeless University Mall building clusters, hovering on top of the Free Space which is more open and rustic, naturally anchoring to the landscape slope on the lower datum.
Flexibility vs Publicity
Coherent and align with the mission of the Art Pavilion to promote pilot co-teaching program and engage greater public with art. We design the Curated Space with maximized flexibility and changeability with modular spatial planning and ceiling track and partition system. So the Curated Space can be easily turned into galleries or classroom in various sizes and zoning format. To further engage with the visitors and public from everyday life of the campus, Free Space promotes informal interaction, unexpected encountering and communal events by planning the cafe and artist in residence workshop and studio along the public path, open terrace and grand steps linking Cultural Plaza and University Mall.
Spatial Dialogue with the Greater Context
Situated between University Mall and Avenue the Art Pavilion maintains a subtle profile in the landscape, nearly half is merged with landscape slope, with 3 levels of Curated Space hovering above. The Curated Space, expressed in a monolithic massing echo with the building clusters yet its form and perforation is reflecting the interior journey to create visual dialogue with the site axis. From the ground up, it has a visual opening and LED integrated wall facing towards the Cultural Plaza to create dialogue and for art event promotion use. Balcony along the connecting bridge and lift lobby provide a glimpse of greenery towards the mountain. Terrace on the top floor embrace the panoramic view towards Ma On Shan as well as a chance to glimpse back towards the ICS and University Mall at the end of the art journey. Although the pavilion is small in scale, visitors are guided through a historical and emotional journey, characterized by views, axis, and infusion of natural daylight in order to relate oneself to the greater whole campus context.
Unfolding Journey for Unexpected Encountering
Instead of a traditional White Box museum of compartmented exhibition rooms, we design the Art Pavilion as an unfolding spatial journey of art encountered by the natural sceneries, exhibits, classrooms, communal encountering along. The path can be operated by itself but also can be linked with existing galleries to extend and enrich the entire visiting routes. We call it Yellow Box museum, like an unfolded Chinese painting, an authentic spatial design specifically for Lo Kwee Seong Art and Culture Pavilion.
