The Amtrium is the latest addition to the trade fair and conference centre Amsterdam RAI. The multifunctional building includes office space, conference rooms, a public restaurant, and more. Many sustainable applications, including a climate zone with plants (greenhouse), make the Amtrium the first conference centre in the Netherlands to be awarded a BREEAM-NL Excellent certificate. In the restaurant, diners will soon be able to enjoy dishes prepared with herbs and vegetables grown in the greenhouse on the south façade.
URBAN PLANNING CONTEXT – The design explicitly considered how well the building fits with the existing complex while also having a connection with the Scheldeplein. With its transparent lower façade, the Amtrium creates new interaction between the RAI and the residential area that adjoins the complex. The addition of a high quality restaurant that is open to the public also contributes to the culinary and entertainment value of the neighbourhood.

The Amtrium primarily consists of two distinct volumes: a public lower structure that connects to the horizontal base of the Europe Complex, and the upper structure that houses the office levels. The volumes are separated from each other by slightly setting back the first storey with additional spaces for visitors and the canteen. The segmentation of the volume is reinforced by the distinction between the concrete frame of the lower structure and the ribbed façade screen at the office volume. This design maintains the integrity of the characteristic Europe Complex, consisting of the monumental Europahal with two low wings.

LAYOUT – The design for the Amtriumorganises the functions in the most compact possible volume. Bundling functions for employees and the public provides many advantages such as increased density of the RAI complex, efficient logistics and double use of the building systems and facilities.

The ground floor has a large conference hall that can be divided into two smaller spaces. The hall is surrounded by a generous foyer with an entrance on the square in front of the RAI and a direct connection to the North-Eastern Hall. To make as much space as possible available for the public on the ground floor, supporting functions such as technical facilities, cloakroom and toilet clusters are placed in the basement. The centre of the foyer contains escalators that take visitors to and from the first storey.

The void around the escalators in the first storey creates a spectacular 12 metre-high space. This allows light from the atrium to fall onto the escalators and the wall of the great hall, making visibility and orientation for visitors easier.

The office levels are 30 metres deep, a dimension within which all contemporary office concepts can be facilitated. This dimension also provides the possibility of changing the functional use in the future, for example to a meeting and conference centre. An atrium brings daylight into the heart of these levels. This creates bright, spacious levels that can be divided into traditional office cells or be configured with an open layout according to ‘the new world of work’ principle. An extension has been added to the ground floor and first storey for a restaurant open to the public directly on the Scheldeplein.

The restaurant has a rooftop patio on the first storey. An exterior space adjoining the canteen is also created for the RAI staff. This rooftop patio is located on the top floor of the restaurant. The view of the two patios at different elevations creates a lively image that improves the atmosphere of the Scheldeplein.

BREEAM-NL EXCELLENT – Highly sustainable technologies were used in the development of the compact building. A climate zone with plants (greenhouse) is used to preheat the air with warmth from the sun, while taking exhaust air from the conference rooms. Rainwater is collected and used to irrigate the plants. Lifts, technical systems and emergency staircases are all integrated into the climate zone.

The atrium provides ventilation for the offices and is connected to the climate zone in a sustainable climate concept. It uses residual heat systems in combination with a geothermal heat pump and combined heat and power. Heat is stored in the summer and cold is stored in the winter, and residual heat is converted into electricity. All the installations are energy efficient and make maximum use of sustainable sources. The orientation of the building, the geometry of the façade and the atrium in the heart of the office facilities ensure that daylight can be used for lighting as much as possible.
