The City of Sydney has revealed new visions for an open-air plaza at Green Square designed by Stewart Hollenstein and Colin Stewart Architects.
The plaza will be a new outdoor event space in the Green Square Town Centre, and will sit atop a mostly underground library, which is also designed by Stewart Hollenstein and Colin Stewart Architects. The practices won an international design competition for the projects in 2013.
The plaza design features a glazed entry pavilion, a tower with views of the plaza and a ring of trees, which will frame the space.
“The current design for the library and plaza has stayed true to the ambitions of the competition design,” said Matthias Hollenstein, director of Stewart Hollenstein.
“The plaza design has evolved in a very intricate way. It spans a sloping site, yet has been designed to allow for continuous activation along its retail edges and across its width.”
The proposed event space will host major celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, Australia Day and the Lunar New Year. The space will have capacity for up to 4,000 revellers.
It will also be an outdoor venue for smaller events such as live music, fashion shows, art exhibitions and video screenings and international sports broadcasts.
“[The plaza’s] scale allows for the capacity required for larger scale events, such as Chinese New Year, while its level of intimacy caters to the everyday activities of local residents and visitors,” Hollenstein explained.
Clover Moore, City of Sydney Lord Mayor, said the Green Square town centre would have “an expected population of more than 7,500 people by 2030 … We need to match this growth with high-quality community facilities and open spaces that local residents and visitors can enjoy.
“This new plaza will become the heart of the area and provide a welcoming place for the community to come together for cultural events and celebrations both large and small.”
The City of Sydney expects to lodge a development application for the plaza in the coming weeks. Construction on the library has already begun. If approved, the plaza is scheduled to open, with the library, in early 2018.
Elsewhere in the Green Square precinct, construction began this week on the Peter Stutchbury Architecture-designed creative hub, which will be housed in the former nurses quarters of the South Sydney Hospital.
Matthias Hollenstein and Chris McBride, City of Sydney’s senior design manager (architecture) will present a free talk on the proposed Green Square Library and Plaza at Surry Hills Library on Saturday 30 April.
