Brabant
Reweaving the urban carpet - Brabant
For the IABR 2014 Ontwerpatelier Brabantstad (AWB + FAA + LOLA) researched the metropole region BrabantStad. Brabant scores high on various lists, but is spatially standing still. How can the fragmented nature of the Brabant carpet landscape be used as a strength?
The IABR project workshop explored this layered task and proposed six models of development. This results in an accumulative development area instead of one regional plan.
The Brabant landscape carpet was one of the highlights during the exhibition of the IABR in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. The tapestry of 12 meters long and 3 meters high was produced by Textilelab in Tilburg, and made a tour along the five major cities of Brabant. From March 2015 the tapestry is on permanent display at the Provincial House.
Noord-Brabant faces major ecological and social-economic challenges. At the same time, the dynamics and inventiveness of the residents and entrepreneurs are a huge opportunity. To answer the challenges and to take full advantage of the power of the community, the region should look for visions and methods to reactivate the urban tapestry.
The specific spatial pattern characterizes the province of Noord Brabant. It is an urban carpet: a colorful mosaic of neighborhoods, intensive agriculture, lanes, villages, industrial activities, stream valleys, natural areas and channels.
To enhance the qualities and potential of the Brabant business and residential landscape, the carpet needs to be redeveloped: new economic around quality housing, landscaped recreation and innovative entrepreneurship must be connected to the water issue. This so-called local intertwined, the restitching of the carpet, provides new links and/or better interpretations of the carpet. Six test areas demonstrate these new spatial links: six so-called machines that depict with what programs Noord-Brabant can start working in the future and where in the territory these programs could be relevant.
