Casa Encanto is a restoration and remodel project of a “casona” from the early XX century, located in Mérida, a few meters from the emblematic Paseo Montejo. The project aims to contribute to the preservation of the residential use of Merida’s Historic Center by reusing the existing construction and giving it a new life.

The project's name, Casa Encanto, arises in honor of the owner's home country, Puerto Rico, the Enchanted Island. This name evokes the charm and magic that characterize both the restored mansion and Puerto Rican culture.

The concept of the project is based on creating an authentic space, seeking to preserve and highlight the original architectural elements of the casona, thus maintaining its historical essence and unique character. Careful restoration and respect for the original details allow the house to reveal its history and identity, generating a unique and memorable experience for its users.

The project focuses on maintaining the historical structure of the casona, preserving its essence and authenticity. The decision is made to demolish all annexes added to the original construction over time to work with the historic part in its purest form. The goal is to pay homage to the original structure, without competing with it, by incorporating a new construction that integrates harmoniously. The design of the new volume respects the scale and architectural features of the casona, creating a balanced and respectful coexistence that preserves the historical charm and provides a contemporary interpretation.

The central courtyard becomes the heart of Casa Encanto. Its importance as the central space of the house is enhanced, where different areas and activities converge. The courtyard is conceived as a meeting place, a connection with nature, and a visual and sensory enjoyment.



该项目的物质材料基于尤卡坦地区的手工元素。使用当地材料，如意大利面地板、现有的砖石、热带木材、传统的chukum和rajuela石材进行覆层和饰面。这些材料不仅突出了区域特色，而且还提供了耐用性以及与当地历史和文化的真实联系。

The materiality of the project is based on artisanal elements from the Yucatan region. Local materials such as pasta floors, existing masonry, tropical wood, traditional chukum, and rajuela stone for cladding and finishes are used. These materials not only highlight the regional identity but also provide durability and an authentic connection to history and local culture.

The historical restoration of Casa Encanto presented special construction challenges due to the preservation of the original character of the casona, the narrow and irregular lot that allowed little space for workers and machinery. Meticulous and artisanal work was required to maintain the integrity of the historical architectural elements, such as walls, arches, and original carpentry. The use of traditional construction techniques was essential to achieve genuine authenticity in the restoration. Every detail was carefully considered and handcrafted, requiring artisanal effort and meticulous dedication to preserve the charm and historical essence of the casona.



建筑师决定保留现有的古代蓄水池作为通往房屋新部分的重要元素，提供与过去的切实联系，提醒历史遗产在 Encanto住宅当代背景下的重要性。它成为焦点，与螺旋楼梯产生视觉张力，同时提供了通往二楼的通道。

The decision was made to preserve the existing ancient cistern as a significant element in the journey towards the new part of the house, providing a tangible connection to the past, reminding of the importance of historical heritage in the contemporary context of Casa Encanto. It becomes a focal point that creates visual tension with the spiral staircase that provides access to the second level.



该设计侧重于利用景观和自然通风模糊和融合内外部之间的界限，使房屋与周围环境之间建立流畅和谐的关系。该地区的特有植被在设计中起着重要作用。使用该地区的本地植物物种，突出了当地植物群的多样性。植被被巧妙地融入房屋的露台、阳台和内部空间，营造出清新、绿色、和谐的氛围。

The design focuses on blurring and merging the boundaries between interior and exterior, allowing a fluid and harmonious relationship between the house and its surroundings, taking advantage of views and natural ventilation. The endemic vegetation of the area plays a fundamental role in the design. Native plant species to the region are used, highlighting the diversity of local flora. Vegetation is strategically integrated into the patios, terraces, and interiors of the house, creating a fresh, green, and harmonious atmosphere.



Encanto住宅的室内设计的特点是中性，使建筑元素脱颖而出。墙壁和地板使用中性色调创造出突出材料和自然光的画布。但将纺织品、艺术品和装饰细节等元素中加入了色彩以后，又以现代的方式重新诠释了丰富的尤卡坦文化和传统。

The interior design of Casa Encanto is characterized by its neutrality, allowing the architectural elements to stand out on their own. Neutral tones are used on walls and floors, creating a canvas that highlights the materials and natural light. However, strategic touches of color are added in elements such as textiles, artworks, and decorative details, reinterpreting the rich Yucatecan culture and tradition in a contemporary way.
