Delft railway area – Delft is going to become one again. The railway track that cut the inner city in half for decades will soon be gone after the construction of a railway tunnel. The heart of Delft is home to an ingenious, new station with direct connections to an efficient transport hub where train, bus, tram, cyclists and pedestrians come together. The first phase of this major project was completed when the new station was taken into use on Saturday 28 February.

The public transport hub – Benthem Crouwel Architects has been very closely involved in the Delft Railway Area project since 2001. On the instruction of ProRail, Benthem Crouwel, together with the engineers from Railinfra Solutions, determined the position of the railway track and the station in the city, and developed the concept for the new public transport hub.

In this concept, the streams of the various modalities are fully disconnected, enabling travellers to move around freely and without crossings. The result is a very compact, vertically stacked public transport hub where travellers on their way to their destinations can effortlessly change from train to tram, bus, bike and taxi. Benthem Crouwel Architects is responsible for the design of the underground station, the tunnel openings and the various system buildings.

Mecanoo Architecten designed the station concourse in the municipal offices. Benthem Crouwel has fulfilled a unique role in the Delft Railway Area project since 2001, with designs that range from large-scale urban level to the smallest detail. Fourteen years after the initial plans to construct a four-track tunnel, Delft will be taking the first two tracks of a highly functional new station into use, a station where travellers feel welcome and will be able to find their way easily.

The station – With its two island platforms, which lie 9 metres underground, the station of Delft is a unique station. Despite the underground position, the smart use of daylight gives train travellers the sense of an open, organised and safe station. The axis of the station is formed by the wide stairs with the deepened mezzanine that offers access to the platforms, the bicycle storage facility and the station concourse and which forms a spatial unit with the concourse. The mezzanine is surrounded by glass facades. The station forecourt has a glass floor with a span of 25m, adjoining the station concourse. This allows daylight to penetrate the underground platforms and travellers are naturally drawn to the stairs when they get off the train.

In addition to daylight that enters the station via the stairs, artificial light plays an important role in terms of atmosphere and experience of the station. The light concept was developed by Ulrike Brandi Licht from Hamburg, together with Benthem Crouwel. This light concept enhances the use of daylight in the station. The artificial light on the platforms highlights the central stairs and gets weaker towards the ends of the platforms, guiding travellers as they go.

A play of lines that move alongside each other is used to light up the public areas. Light elements on the walls of the tunnel refer to arriving trains. A rhythm of light strips becomes more frequent at the ends of the platforms to welcome trains with a sea of light, reducing towards the centre of the station, in reference to the trains braking and accelerating. The intentional use of light ensures travellers feel safe and at ease. The sense of overview and safety is enhanced because the platforms are entirely kept free from columns and obstacles: the shiny, light terazzo floor finish reinforces the continuous platform floor, which is interrupted only by seats and benches. Apart from the use of daylight, the atmosphere of the underground station is mainly determined by the special ceiling. Four meters above the platform we see long, shiny aluminium panels, whose shape and direction take travellers to the stairs, as it were. This lowered ceiling provides security and a human scale but still conveys the robust of the railway track in the station. The ceiling gives the underground station a strong sense of direction and perspective.
The ceiling accommodates all systems and provides excellent acoustics on the platforms. The layout and tranquillity in the station's design were achieved because the concrete structures, the railway tracks and overhead wires, the necessary technology and all provisions for travellers have been geared to each other in detail from the first instance.

Bicycle storage facility – A bicycle storage facility will be built underneath the bus forecourt, offering space to about 5,000 bicycles and direct links to city cycling routes. The objective is for the various modes of transport to link up with each other to the best possible extent. Cyclists enter the facility via a ramp, park their bikes (and thanks to the glass facade they have uninterrupted views of the platforms and trains), and are then guided to the mezzanine or underground station via wide, clearly demarcated paths.

System buildings – Apart from the underground station, Benthem Crouwel also designed all the system buildings required for the correct functioning of the tunnel. For the system buildings, escape hatches, transformer station and relay stations it was decided not to opt for standard solutions, but to construct high-quality buildings with their own distinctive characters. Benthem Crouwel Architects very much enjoyed working on the Delft Railway Area project. When the underground station is taken into use, the high ambitions of ProRail and the Municipality of Delft to develop a smart, high-quality station will have become reality, taking a big step towards the future.
