Silo Erlenmatt in Basel, Switzerland by Harry Gugger Studio

AR New into Old awards 2021 shortlisted: Harry Gugger Studio’s interventions into the former cocoa bean silo in Kleinbasel are playful, but not carefree
There is a hazard lying in wait in any renovation of an industrial building. The hazard is a preoccupation with form for its own sake, forgoing any careful attention to construction. Harry Gugger Studio have developed a strong practice around these transformations, and their conversion of an old silo in Kleinbasel into a hostel, restaurant and atelier space departs from an understanding of such complexities of construction in this context.

Located in a newly developed ‘urban quarter’ Erlenmatt Ost, the result of the studio’s tender approach is a refreshing set of spaces that retain some of the leanness of the original building, while providing space for new activity. ‘We took the challenge of accommodating the programme with the least possible interventions’, admits Harry Gugger. The existing concrete frame was made structurally sound with the intervention of two generous sculptural cores at either end. Elsewhere warm wooden insertions and perforated bricks divide up the internal space, with columns hugged by doors stretching elegantly from the floor to the ceiling. The palette of materials is restrained. Colour is found in the hostel and atelier rooms where curtains have been added, giving the spaces a more domestic scale, but it is the spirit of the structure that is allowed to sing loudest.

The architectural treatment of the old body of the industrial silo is playful, but not carefree. It is a (much-treasured) toy in the hands of the architects. A grid of pyramidical grain hoppers bestows the original building with a big personality; these are experienced on the new ground floor of the building, and make for a curious ceiling in the largely unenclosed restaurant space. On the first floor, the hoppers are filled to accommodate a set of hostel rooms on the street side and atelier space on the courtyard side of the building. Above this, the project makes space inhabitable on the upper floor in areas of the building previously only reached by machine parts and stray cocoa beans.

A history of the building’s previous use is indicated by its location at the limits of Switzerland’s perimeter. The silo is nestled beside hostile neighbours – a large motorway curves round to enclose the area, and beyond that is Basel Badischer Bahnhof, a railway station on Swiss soil, but so close to Germany that it is German-run. Built in 1912 to store grain and then cocoa, the business model of the company that owned the silo – whose warehouses were well-positioned within Europe’s ‘blue banana’ – was to import goods in huge quantities in order to distribute them domestically. It is perhaps pertinent that the economic story of the building unfolds further in its latest phase to host young travellers from all over the world, providing them with a base from which to disperse and explore the country.

Oversized porthole-like windows are the most obvious alteration to the building, and imbue a boat-ness to its considerable mass – a nod to the harbour and the building’s past activities. To make the windowless structure inhabitable, the most elementary problem to be solved was how to let in light: ‘If you come in with a rectangular window you disturb the rhythm of the tectonic structure. The round window allows the wall to float around it. It is witty but also friendly to the original character of the building’. One might think that everything is too polished, until the building blinks to reveal its bright-blue eyelids – sun-shades that fold out from above the windows to shield direct sunlight. These moments, as well as sharp references to the original building throughout – window handles echo the grain hopper wheels for example – make the project feel unselfconscious and fun. The ‘SILO’, as named by the operators – an association called Talent – is an enjoyable set of spaces for an overlapping set of programmes. As the restrictions of the pandemic loosen, it will be allowed to flourish to its full potential.
