AL_A has unveiled plans for ‘Pitch/Pitch’, a series of stackable 5-a-side football pitches designed to be constructed on vacant sites across London. The scheme is a response to a lack of inner city sports venues, and has been conceived as a temporary installation that is both fast and easy to set up. Innovative construction methods mean that a temporary stadium could be erected for two weeks to coincide with a football tournament, or remain in place for a much longer period.
Working with Arup, Amanda Levete’s practice designed the modular system using a lightweight carbon-fiber structure, a material more commonly associated with the aerospace industry.
AL_A previously used carbon-fiber to create a canopy of translucent ‘petals’ for Melbourne’s 2015 MPavilion. The design employed composite construction methods to create a modular design comprising 13 large and 30 small petals, all held up by 95 columns.
‘We’ve designed this intervention to encourage the theatre of the game, with spectators and would-be players drawn in as Pitch/Pitch animates the cityscape,’explains director at AL_A, Maximiliano Arrocet.
‘Pitch/Pitch allows the game to retain an urban flavor, adapting to the number of players and awkward shaped sites.’ AL_A is now working with partners with a view to financing and implementing the scheme across the UK capital.
